De retour au MAI, Ganesh Anandan nous présente une collaboration avec le musicien bulgare Lubo
Alexandrov, l’ambassadeur montréalais du klezmer « Socalled », l’enchanteresse bulgare Vlada Tomova et la
chanteuse hétéroclite Danielle Richard. We5 présente des chants traditionnels bulgares et juifs, arrangés
avec un twist. Ces deux concerts inédits tournent autour des méandres de la voix et l’arrangement
inhabituel de ces répertoires traditionnels vous transporte au coeur des rythmes bulgares, juifs, indiens et
électroniques.

Ganesh Anandan, un maître des percussions et un érudit en théorie de musique classique, marie des
influences indiennes et occidentales. Né à Bangalore en Inde, formé par un gourou traditionnel, il a étudié au
prestigieux Karnataka College of Percussion de Bangalore. Cet artiste innovateur cherche perpétuellement à
pousser plus loin les frontières musicales, que ce soit à travers des collaborations diverses ou en fabriquant
ses propres instruments.

Lubo Alexandrov a hérité son talent et sa passion pour la musique traditionnelle bulgare de son grand-père,
le grand joueur de kaval, Atanav Ganchev. Lubo est aussi formé en guitare jazz et en composition, en plus
d’avoir étudié la musique turque et la guitare fretless. Au sein de We5, il apporte son savoir en
instrumentation bulgare, avec une note personnelle.

Josh Dolgin, alias Socalled, est connu comme le plus grand mixer de klezmer et hip-hop à Montréal. Il a
enregistré avec le rappeur Killah Priest du groupe Wu-Tang Clan, le musicien américain de klezmer Frank
London, et Irvin Fields, le nonagénaire précurseur du sous-genre jazz-fusion, parmi d’autres.

Vlada Tomova est une vocaliste, arrangeuse et compositrice d’origine bulgare qui aime incorporer ses
sensibilités balkanique et d’ailleurs à son style contemporain. Cette artiste new-yorkaise convoitée a atteint le
sommet de hit-parades mondiaux pour son travail avec Balkan Beatbox. Vlada a également composé la
musique de plusieurs court-métrages et celle de l’émission populaire pour enfants, Dora l’Exploratrice.

Danielle Richard est chanteuse, « screameuse », auteure de chansons, bassiste et membre du groupe
montréalais La Cage de Bruits. Formée en musique classique et en jazz, elle est connue pour son mixage de
styles aussi divers que le chant traditionnel bulgare et le métal hardcore.

Le résultat de cette collaboration éclectique d’artistes est un voyage sonore qui vous amène au prochain
palier de l’avant-garde.

“Socalled”: electronic mixing, accordion, arrangement
Ganesh Anandan returns to the MAI with a new collaboration involving Montreal’s Bulgarian musician Lubo
Alexandrov, poster boy for klezmer “Socalled”, Balkan voice sorceress Vlada Tomova, and versatile
songstress Danielle Richard. We5 arranges Bulgarian and Jewish songs, with a twist. In these two original
shows, the quintet’s focal point is the human voice. Their unusual arrangement of traditional material takes
you to a place where Bulgarian, Indian, Jewish and electronic rhythms are one.
Ganesh Anandan, a master of percussions and a scholar of classical musical theory, reflects Indian and
Western influences. Born in Bangalore, India, he was trained by a traditional guru and studied at Bangalore’s
prestigious Karnataka College of Percussion. Anandan is ever seeking to push the barriers of musical
expression further, through eclectic collaborations or by building his own instruments.
Lubo Alexandrov inherited his passion and talent for Bulgarian folk music from his grandfather—Atanas
Ganchev, a well-known kaval player in Bulgaria, and is also trained in jazz guitar and composition. Moreover,
he is well-schooled in Turkish music and fretless guitar. For We5, he contributes Bulgarian instrumentation
with a personal touch.
Josh Dolgin, a.k.a. Socalled, best known as Montreal's leading mixer of klezmer and hip-hop, has recorded
with the Wu-Tang Clan rapper Killah Priest, the prominent American klezmer musician Frank London, and the
nonagerian jazz-fusion pioneer Irving Fields, among others.
Vlada Tomova is a Bulgarian-born vocalist, arranger and composer based in New York who likes to weave
Balkan and world sensibilities into her own contemporary sound. This much sought-after artist’s work with
Balkan Beatbox earned the group top positions on world music charts. She has written music for short films,
and for Nickelodeon’s popular kids show Dora the Explorer.
Danielle Richard is a Montreal singer, “screamer”, songwriter, bass player and member of La Cage de
Bruits. Known for her mixing of styles as diverse as Bulgarian tradition song and hardcore metal, she received
formal training in classical music and jazz.
The result of this singular mix of artists is an irresistible sound journey that takes us to the next level of the
avant-garde.
